Phil Stallard | What the Ferry Said

Phil Stallard | What the Ferry Said

These new paintings are conversations with places, it’s a dialogue where I’ve used abstraction, realism, impressionism and emotional colour triggers for the painting to work.

One of my studios is located on the Hawkesbury at Wisemans Ferry , I travel through the  landscape, I do paintings using memories to evoke the emotion of a place, it’s as if the ferry is telling me what to paint.

In this exhibition more than ever I’m exploring a multitude of visual devices to construct a meditative visual experience. It’s all underpinned by a heartfelt yearning to be connected to the landscape and to get past what I’m seeing to a kind of abstract transcendence.

The paintings are very water like, I play jazz / ambient music when I paint. I compose music in between painting, with my partner Lynne we travel up through Northern NSW, I paint the natural beauty in and around Sydney, I have also been artist in residence at the Rochfort studio in Double Bay - all these experiences have gone into the mix for my solo show.
